VTO Internet Portfolio
Summary |
Stocks closed
mixed as investors continued to shop for bargains in the energy and retail sectors, while
taking profits on biotechnology and semiconductor issues. The Dow Jones Industrial Average
(DJIA: +26.99, 10,164.92) closed higher for the fourth straight day. The Dow
has not posted five consecutive winning sessions since August.
Weakness in the Internet and semiconductor sectors knocked the
VTO Internet Portfolio down $26,734.07, or 2.0%. Applied Micro Circuits (AMCC) fell 8 5/8 to 255 3/8, BroadVision (BVSN) gave back 7 3/4 to 248 1/2, JDS Uniphase (JDSU) shed 7 7/8 to 273, NEXTLINK Communications (NXLK) slid 4 3/4 to 106 - sold at 103 5/8, PMC-Sierra (PMCS) deflated 9 31/64 to 185 7/16, QLogic (QLGC) receded 8 1/16 to 140 11/16, Terayon Communication (TERN) deteriorated 8 3/4 to 223 - sold at 217, and TranSwitch (TXCC) slumped 16 13/16 to 97 11/16.
I added a few short positions to the IP, but I don't see the
Nasdaq Composite collapsing any time soon. Cisco Systems (CSCO: +1 1/16, 132 3/4), Dell Computer (DELL: +1 59/64, 44 15/16), Microsoft (MSFT: +2 9/16, 93 3/8), and MCI WorldCom (WCOM: +2 1/16, 47 13/16) all posted gains today.
After the market closed, Ariba (ARBA: +19 13/16, 299 11/16) declared a 2-for-1 stock split. Shares of
the B2B services and solutions provider rose 15 5/16 to 315 in after-hours trading. |
